What is Portion Balance?

Portion balance is about ensuring consumers are offered a variety of food and beverages to balance volume, proportionality, and quality.

Why Focus on Portions?

VOLUME

The average size of many of our food portions has grown by as much as 138% since the 1970s, according to data from the  American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of Nutrition, and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

It’s human nature to eat when presented with food, and to eat more when presented with more food.

PROPORTIONALITY

“People need to learn that they can eat a satisfying amount of food if they eat larger portions of nutrient-rich foods lower in calorie density while limiting foods high in calorie density”. Dr. Barbara Rolls, Penn State

QUALITY

Only 1 in 10 U.S. adults are getting the recommended level of fruits and vegetables and level of dairy. Most children and adults are getting less than the recommended amounts of dietary fiber and whole grains. At the same time, most Americans exceed the recommendations for added sugar, saturated fats, and sodium.

Focusing on portions takes some of the guesswork out of how to offer and how to eat a diet consistent with a healthy lifestyle.
